Not all “reef-safe” labels are honest. We sent 9 popular sunscreens to a lab for UV filter analysis.
The 9 Tested
Banana Boat, Coppertone, Neutrogena, Sun Bum, Thinksport, Badger, Stream2Sea, Reef Repair, Raw Elements
The Winners (Confirmed Reef-Safe)
Only 3 brands actually contained only non-reef-damaging filters (zinc oxide + titanium dioxide, no oxybenzone/octinoxate):
- Thinksport SPF 50+ — best all-around, didn’t run in 90°F heat
- Badger Sport SPF 35 — best for sensitive skin, certified B-Corp
- Raw Elements Eco Formula SPF 30 — best for water sports, 80-min water resistance
The Surprising Losers
Two “reef-safe” labeled products actually contained oxybenzone. Always check the active ingredient list, not just the marketing.
Hawaii banned oxybenzone/octinoxate in 2021. If it’s banned there, it’s banned for good reason.
